Choosing a Communication and Data Storage Platform

As companies become more reliant on digital tools and programming the data that power them is becoming a more important component. In many instances the storage of data and communication play vital roles in the relationships they have with their clients, customers, and other partners. This can lead to a loss of trust among the parties and a loss of business.

Enterprises must have a reliable platform for communication and data storage to prevent losing important information. The platforms must be able to handle huge amounts of real-time information and have the capacity to store the data for a long time. They should also allow different systems to access data.

Direct area storage and network-based data storage are the two primary types. Direct area storage, also called direct-attached storage (DAS) is stored on hardware that’s directly connected to the computer which accesses it. Examples include hard disk drives, USB flash drives, solid-state drives and optical discs like compact discs or digital video discs. DAS devices are usually more expensive than data storage using networks but they can provide better access and more local backup capabilities.

Data storage that is network-based is carried out on servers that are connected to networks. This usually takes place in the datacenter. This type of storage allows for more information sharing and greater redundancy and disaster protection than DAS. It may be more affordable dependent on the storage solution. Common solutions include network-attached storage (NAS) storage area networks (SAN) and object storage platforms.
